A supervisory system is judged by how well it knows the process it governs. Every sector has its own variables, its own regulatory constraints, its own way of reading an alarm and its own idea of what a normal day looks like.

Gas treatment plants with on-site power generation. Fiscal metering means re-reading values from flow computers with the right map, and maps of apparently identical devices differ by revision. Emergency shutdown and fire and gas detection carry independence requirements that belong in the design, not added afterwards.

Wind and solar farms are run by indicators: capacity factor, technical availability, wake losses, energy curtailed at the grid’s request. The instantaneous value says little; what matters is the deviation from the expected profile, made legible without forcing the operator to do the arithmetic.

Treatment, trunk mains, pumping and distribution, across networks covering dozens of municipalities. Water balance and leak detection on district metered areas are the reason telecontrol exists: night flow in a district says more than any other measurement.

Activated sludge treatment: water line and sludge line, with anaerobic digestion and biogas recovery turning a cost into an output. Discharge limits are a legal constraint, so historising quality variables is not an accessory but the core of the system.

Electrochemical storage coupled to renewable generation has its own operating logic: state of charge is managed against the surplus of the coupled plant and against grid services, and degradation has to be measured because it sets the asset’s residual value.

Packaging lines, dairies, feed mills, metals. Here the process runs in batches: the recipe, the sequence, the cleaning between one product and the next. Supervision has to know what is being produced, not only what is being measured, and line performance is read broken down into availability, performance and quality.
